Grottesco
La parola grottesca deriva dalla stessa radice latina come "grotta", originaria del greco krypte "luogo nascosto", cioè una piccola grotta o cavità. Il significato originale era limitato a uno stile stravagante di arte antica romana riscoperta e poi copiata a Roma alla fine del XV secolo. Le "grotte" erano in realtà stanze e corridoi della Domus Aurea, il complesso palazzo incompiuto, iniziato da Nero dopo il Grande Fuoco di Roma nel 64 dC, che era diventato sovrastato e sepolto, finché non furono ripresi, in gran parte dall'alto. Sparso dall'italiano alle altre lingue europee, il termine è stato usato lunga in gran parte intercambiabile con arabeschi e moreschi per i tipi di modelli decorativi che utilizzano elementi curvi di fogliame. Da almeno il XVIII secolo, grottesco è stato utilizzato come aggettivo generale per lo strano, fantastico, brutto, incongruo, sgradevole o disgustoso e quindi è spesso utilizzato per descrivere forme strane e forme distorte come le maschere di Halloween.
