L'esametro è una linea metrica di versi composta da sei piedi. Era il misuratore epico standard della letteratura greca e latina classica, come nell'Iliade, Odissea e Aeneide. Il suo uso in altri generi di composizione comprendono i satiri di Orazio, le Metamorfosi di Ovidio e gli inni di Orfeo. Secondo la mitologia greca, l'esametro è stato inventato dal dio Hermes. Nel hexametro classico, i sei piedi seguono queste regole: ▪ Un piede può essere costituito da due lunghe sillabe, uno spondese; O una lunga e due sillabe corte, un dattilico. ▪ I primi quattro piedi possono contenere uno di loro. ▪ Il quinto è quasi sempre dactyl, e l'ultimo deve essere uno spondee.
