Hydrangea o (/ haɪdreɪndʒ (i) ə /; nomi comuni ortensia o hortensia) è un genere di 70-75 specie di piante fiorite native dell'Asia meridionale e orientale (Cina, Giappone, Corea, Himalaya e Indonesia) e le Americhe . Di gran lunga la più grande diversità delle specie è nell'Asia orientale, in particolare in Cina, Giappone e Corea. La maggior parte sono arbusti da 1 a 3 metri di altezza, ma alcuni sono piccoli alberi e altri lianas che raggiungono fino a 30 m (98 piedi) scalando gli alberi. Possono essere decidui o sempreverdi, anche se le specie temperate ampiamente coltivate sono decidue. Dopo l'introduzione alle Azzorre, H. macrophylla è ormai molto comune, in particolare su Faial, nota come "isola blu" a causa del vasto numero di ortensie presenti sull'isola. Le specie del genere Schizophragma, anche in Hydrangeaceae, sono spesso conosciute come ortensie. Schizofragma hydrangeoides e Hydrangea petiolaris sono entrambi comunemente noti come ortensie di arrampicata. Ci sono due arrangiamenti di fiori in ortensie. I fiori di Mophead sono grandi teste rotonde simili a pomponi o, come il nome suggerisce, la testa di un mop.
