Nella matematica, un'iperbola è un tipo di curva liscia, che si trova in un piano, definito dalle sue proprietà geometriche o da equazioni per cui è la soluzione impostata. Una iperbola ha due pezzi chiamati componenti o rami connessi, che sono immagini speculative l'una dell'altra e somigliano a due archi infiniti. L'iperbola è uno dei quattro tipi di sezione conica, formata dall'intersezione di un piano e di un doppio cono. Se il piano interseca entrambe le metà del doppio cono, ma non passa attraverso l'apice dei coni, allora il cono è un iperbole. Le iperbolie si presentano in molti modi: come la curva che rappresenta la funzione nel piano cartesiano, come l'aspetto di un cerchio considerato dall'interno, come il percorso seguito dall'ombra della punta di un meridiano, come forma di un'orbita aperta, Come l'orbita di una nave spaziale durante una gravità assistita da un pianeta o più in generale di qualsiasi veicolo che supera la velocità di fuga del pianeta più vicino, come il cammino di una cometa di apparizione singola, come la traiettoria di dispersione di una particella subatomica, e così via. Ogni ramo dell'iperbola ha due bracci che si allontanano più dritti dal centro dell'iperbola.
