Un killifish è uno dei vari cipri di oviparous cyprinodontiform. Complessivamente, ci sono circa 1270 specie diverse di uccidere, la più grande famiglia che è Rivulidae, che contiene più di 320 specie. Anche se il killifish è talvolta utilizzato come equivalente inglese a Cyprinodontidae, alcune specie appartenenti a quella famiglia hanno i loro nomi comuni, come il pupfish e il mummichog.
