Lac
Lac è la secrezione scarlatta resinosa di una serie di specie di insetti, ovvero alcune delle specie del genere Metatachardia, Laccifer, Tachordiella, Austrotacharidia, Afrotachardina e Tachardina della superfamiglia Coccoidea, di cui le specie più coltivate sono la lacca di Kerria. Le famiglie sopraccitate sono alcune delle 28 famiglie di insetti di scala e di farina che comprendono un grande gruppo di circa 8.000 specie descritte di insetti di succhiamento vegetale, alcuni dei quali producono prodotti naturali simili. Migliaia di questi piccoli insetti colonizzano rami di alberi adatti e secernono il pigmento resinoso. I rami rivestiti degli alberi ospitanti vengono tagliati e raccolti come sticklac. Lo sticklac raccolto viene schiacciato e si separa per rimuovere le impurità. Il materiale sezionato viene poi lavato ripetutamente per rimuovere parti dell'insetto e altro materiale solubile. Il prodotto risultante è noto come seedlac. Il seme del prefisso si riferisce alla sua forma del pellet. Seedlac che contiene ancora le impurità del 3-5% viene trasformata in gommala mediante trattamento termico o estrazione con solvente.
