Attacca il gruppo alchilico alla base guanina del DNA, al numero 7 atomo di azoto dell'anello di imidazolo. Altrimenti noto come L-fenilalanina Senape, o L-PAM, melphalan è un derivato fenilalanina di mechlorethamine.
