Phonofiddle
Un phonofiddle è una classe di strumenti musicali a corde che vengono suonati con un arco e utilizzano un riproduttore di tipo fonografo come casella vocale. Il diaframma che produce il suono può essere un cono metallico come nel violino Stroh o in un foglio di mica come negli strumenti realizzati da A. T. Howson, Londra e dalla società Stroviols della Gran Bretagna. Il suono generato dalle vibrazioni dalla stringa o dalle stringhe viene trasferito attraverso il ponte a un braccio di connessione al centro del diaframma all'interno del riproduttore. La colonna vibrante dell'aria viene poi indirizzata in uno o più corna. Il 4 maggio 1899, Johannes Matthias Augustus Stroh ha presentato un brevetto in Gran Bretagna, GB9418 intitolato Improvements in Violins e altri Stringed Instruments, accettato il 24 marzo 1900. Questo descrive l'uso di un diaframma in metallo piatto nella voce- Scatola di un violino per amplificare meccanicamente il suono. Poi il 16 febbraio 1901 ha presentato domanda per un secondo brevetto britannico, GB3393 intitolato Miglioramenti nei diaframmi di fonografi, strumenti musicali, e anologo di produzione, registrazione e trasmissione di suoni. Che è stato accettato il 14 dicembre 1901.
