Il disgusto è una risposta emozionale di ribellione a qualcosa di offensivo o sgradevole. La ricerca ha sempre dimostrato una relazione tra disgusto e disturbi d'ansia quali l'arachnophobia, le fobie di tipo iniezione di sangue e la disturbo ossessivo-compulsivo correlato alla paura della contaminazione. Il disgusto è una delle emozioni fondamentali della teoria delle emozioni di Robert Plutchik ed è stata studiata in modo estensivo da Paul Rozin. Richiede una caratteristica espressione facciale, una delle sei espressioni facciali universali di emozioni di Paul Ekman. A differenza delle emozioni di paura, rabbia e tristezza, il disgusto è associato a una diminuzione della frequenza cardiaca.
