Lo Stoat, noto anche come la coda a coda corta, è una specie di Mustelidae originaria dell'Eurasia e dell'America settentrionale, distinta dal minimo cespuglio dalla sua taglia più grande e dalla coda più lunga con una punta nera prominente. Il nome ermine è spesso, ma non sempre, utilizzato per l'animale nel suo puro cappotto bianco o in pelliccia. A partire dalla fine del XIX secolo, gli ufficiali sono stati introdotti in Nuova Zelanda per controllare i conigli, ma hanno avuto un effetto devastante sulle popolazioni autoctone di uccelli. È classificata dall'IUCN come minima preoccupazione, a causa della sua ampia diffusione circumpolare e perché non presenta alcuna significativa minaccia alla sua sopravvivenza. È stato nominato uno dei 100 "peggiori tipi invasivi" del mondo da parte del gruppo specialista invasivo delle Specie di sopravvivenza della specie IUCN. La pelliccia di lusso di ermine è spesso utilizzata dai monarchi cattolici, dai Pontefici e dai Cardinali che talvolta lo usano come il capo della mozetta e immagini devozionali come il Gesù infantile di Praga.
