Stringhalt è una flessione improvvisa di una o di entrambe le gambe posteriori in cavallo, più facilmente visibili mentre il cavallo sta camminando o trottare. È più evidente quando il cavallo sta facendo il backup lentamente, accendendo la gamba interessata o improvvisamente spaventato. Può coinvolgere una o entrambe le zampe posteriori del cavallo. È una contrazione spasmodica dei tendini laterali dell'estensore delle zampe posteriori. Un esempio di stringhalt bilaterale in un cavallo: gli hocks sono spasmodicamente e rapidamente flessi con i piedi tenuti in alto prima di posizionare rapidamente sul terreno. La condizione è più evidente durante la svolta e il sostegno. Esistono quattro forme di stringhe: ▪ stringhalt australiano: una flatweed è la causa sospetta ▪ Pseudostringhalt: il risultato apparente di una condizione dolorosa nella gamba interessata ▪ stringhalt unilaterale: causa sconosciuta, ma spesso sollevata per sezione del tendine laterale di estensione ▪ Bilaterale Stringhalt: in due su due cavalli affetti necropsiati, il trattamento di talamo anormale varia.
