La vernice è una finitura trasparente, dura, protettiva oa pellicola utilizzata principalmente per la finitura del legno ma anche per altri materiali. La vernice è tradizionalmente una combinazione di un olio essiccante, una resina, un diluente o un solvente. Le finiture di vernice sono di solito lucide ma possono essere progettate per produrre vetri satinati o semilucidi aggiungendo agenti "appiattiti". La vernice ha poco o nessun colore, è trasparente e non ha pigmento aggiunto, a differenza di vernici o macchie di legno che contengono pigmento e generalmente vanno da opaco a traslucido. Vernici vengono applicati anche sulle macchie di legno come ultimo passo per ottenere un film per la lucentezza e la protezione.
