La maggior parte dei batteri hanno una parete cellulare a base di carboidrati, peptidoglicano. I batteri più grandi misurano più di 2 μm e, fino agli inizi del XXI secolo, gli specialisti considerano quelli più piccoli per misurare 0,2 μm, ma ci sono "ultramicrobacteria", tra cui l'acqua dolce. I batteri hanno molte forme: sferiche, allungate o in botte, forme più o meno spirali. Lo studio dei batteri è batteriologia, un ramo della microbiologia.
