W XX wieku Antonio Gramsci rozwinął filozofię i socjologię hegemiki geopolitycznej w teorię hegemonii kulturalnej, dzięki której jedna klasa społeczna może manipulować systemem wartości i obyczajów społeczeństwa, aby stworzyć i ustanowić klasę rządzącą Weltanschauung, światopogląd, który usprawiedliwia status quo burżuazyjnej dominacji innych klas społecznych społeczeństwa.
