W praktycznych zastosowaniach mogą być stosowane razem z innymi metodami, takimi jak kąty Eulera i matryc rotacyjnych, lub jako alternatywa dla nich w zależności od aplikacji. W nowoczesnym języku matematycznym, czwartorzędowe tworzą czterema wymiarową asocjacyjną algebrę podziału normowanego na liczbę rzeczywistą, a tym samym domenę. W rzeczywistości czwartorzędowe były pierwszą algebrą podziału niekonwencjonalnego, która miała zostać odkryta. Algorytm czwartorzędowy jest często oznaczany przez H lub w tablicy pogrubiony przez.
