Var. regaz. Origine incertă. Poate fi un
der. din
sb. gaz „vad”;
cf. zăgaz și
sb. (za)gaziti „a trece prin vad”,
sb. razgaziti „a fixa separat”, care permite să presupunem un *
răzgaz (
cf. răstimp față de
zăstimp), cu disimilare posterioară. Pentru semantism,
cf. sp. vado „repaus”. Relația cu
sl. rokŭ „soroc” sau
lituan.
rákas „soroc” (Cihac, II, 303; Tiktin) este dificilă fonetic.
