Na ecologia, especialmente na limnologia, a distrofia refere-se ao estado aquoso das águas pobres em nutrientes, com ácido rico em ácido e sem limas, que são designadas como águas distróficas. As águas deste tipo são douradas pela alta proporção de substâncias de humus dissolvidas e também são referidas como lagos de água marrom. Esta categoria inclui principalmente águas pantanosas e corpos d'água em florestas resistentes com uma alta proporção de árvores, as substâncias de humus provêm do ambiente morto das águas. Nos lagos distróficos há muito pouco fitoplâncton, mas eles têm uma ocorrência rica de zooplâncton; devido ao baixo teor de oxigênio, a fauna do solo também é muito pobre em espécies. A forma sedimentar típica dessas águas é a lama Dy ou turfa.

Gewässer dieses Typs sind durch den hohen Anteil an gelösten Humussubstanzen braun gefärbt und werden entsprechend auch als Braunwasserseen bezeichnet. In diese Kategorie fallen vor allem Moorgewässer und Gewässer in Bruchwäldern mit einem hohen Laubwurfanteil, die Humussubstanzen stammen aus der moorreichen Umgebung der Gewässer. In dystrophen Seen ist nur sehr wenig Phytoplankton zu finden, allerdings verfügen sie über ein reiches Vorkommen von Zooplankton; aufgrund des sauerstoffarmen Tiefenwassers ist die Bodenfauna zudem sehr artenarm. Die typische Sedimentform dieser Gewässer ist der Dy bzw. Torfschlamm.
