A flotação é um processo de separação físico-química para sólidos de grão fino devido à molhabilidade de superfície diferente das partículas. Ao fazê-lo, o uso é feito do fato de que as bolhas de gás podem tornar-se facilmente hidrofóbicas, h. que são difíceis de molhar pela água e que dão as partículas de flutuabilidade para que flutuem. O pré-requisito é que o gás utilizado dissolve-se na água. Sob estas condições, as bolhas de gás igualmente hidrófobas acumulam-se sobre as superfícies de partículas hidrofóbicas. O processo é usado, por exemplo, na mineração para separar minério e ganga em uma pasta aquosa. Ele substituiu a remoção tradicional de lodo na maioria dos campos de aplicação. A flutuação não pertence aos processos de separação devido à densidade, como muitas vezes é assumido erroneamente. De acordo com a definição de acordo com o código de unidade VDMA 24430, é um processo de separação no qual substâncias dispersas ou suspensas em água são transportadas para a superfície da água aderindo bolhas de gás e são removidas lá com um dispositivo de limpeza.
