Amphora
Uma ânfora é um tipo de recipiente de forma e tamanho característicos, que desce pelo menos tão cedo quanto o Período neolítico. Amphorae foi usada em grande número para o transporte e armazenamento de vários produtos, tanto líquidos quanto secos, mas principalmente para o vinho. É na maioria das vezes cerâmica, mas exemplos em metais e outros materiais foram encontrados. A amphora complementa o grande recipiente de armazenamento, o pithos, que disponibiliza capacidades entre meia e duas e meia toneladas. Em contraste, a ânfora mantém abaixo de uma meia tonelada, tipicamente menos de 100 libras. Os corpos dos dois tipos têm formas semelhantes. Onde os pithos podem ter múltiplos laços ou alças pequenas para fixar um chicote de cordas, a ânfora possui duas alças expansivas que unem o ombro do corpo e um pescoço longo. Os pescoços de pithoi são amplos para escavação ou acesso ao balde. Os pescoços das ânforas são estreitos para serem derramados por uma pessoa que a segura pelo fundo e uma alça. Existem algumas variantes. As alças podem não estar presentes. O tamanho pode exigir dois ou três manipuladores para levantar.
