Asterisco
Um asterisco é um símbolo tipográfico ou glifo. É assim chamado porque se assemelha a uma imagem convencional de uma estrela. Computadores e matemáticos costumam chamá-lo de estrela, ou, de forma mais informal, splat. Em inglês, um asterisco geralmente é de cinco pontas em tipos de letra sans-serif, de seis pontas em tipos serif e de seis ou oito pontos quando manuscrito. Ele pode ser usado para censurar palavras juradas e textos vulgares ou censuráveis. Também é usado na internet para corrigir a ortografia, caso em que aparece antes ou depois da palavra correta. O asterisco é derivado da necessidade das impressoras das árvores genealógicas nos tempos feudais de um símbolo para indicar a data de nascimento. O formato original era de sete braços, cada braço como um tiro de lágrima do centro. Em ciência da computação, o asterisco é comumente usado como um caractere curinga, ou para denotar ponteiros, repetição ou multiplicação.
