Atheroma
Um ateroma é um acúmulo de material degenerativo na íntima da túnica das paredes das artérias. O material consiste em células de macrófagos, ou detritos, contendo lipídios, cálcio e uma quantidade variável de tecido conjuntivo fibroso. O material acumulado forma um inchaço na parede da artéria, que pode entrar no canal da artéria, estreitá-la e restringir o fluxo sanguíneo. O ateroma ocorre na aterosclerose, que é um dos três subtipos de arteriosclerose. No contexto das questões do coração ou da artéria, os ateromatas são comumente referidos como placas ateromatosas. É uma condição insalubre, mas é encontrada na maioria dos humanos. As veias não desenvolvem ateromatas, a não ser que cirurgicamente movem-se para funcionar como uma artéria, como na cirurgia de derivação. A acumulação está sempre na íntima da túnica, entre o revestimento do endotélio e a mídia da túnica do músculo liso na parede da artéria. Enquanto os estágios iniciais, com base na aparência grosseira, tradicionalmente foram chamados de rudes gordurosos por patologistas, eles não são compostos de células de gordura, isto é, células adiposas, mas de acumulações de glóbulos brancos, especialmente macrófagos, que absorveram oxidações de baixa densidade lipoproteína.
