Barbital
Barbital ou barbitone, comercializado sob as marcas Veronal para o ácido puro e Medinal para o sal de sódio, foi o primeiro barbitúrico comercialmente disponível. Foi usado como um adormecido desde 1903 até meados da década de 1950. Os nomes químicos para o barbitone são dietilmalonil ureia ou ácido dietilbarbitúrico; portanto, o sal de sódio, também é conhecido como dietilbarbitúrico de sódio. O barbitona foi preparado por condensação de éster dietilmalónico com ureia na presença de etóxido de sódio e depois adicionando pelo menos dois equivalentes molares de iodeto de etilo ao sal de prata de malonilureia ou possivelmente a uma solução básica do ácido. O resultado foi um pó cristalino branco inodoro, ligeiramente amargo.
