Paradoxo de Cantor
Na teoria dos conjuntos, o paradoxo de Cantor é derivável do teorema de que não há maior número cardinal, de modo que a coleção de "tamanhos infinitos" é infinita. A dificuldade é tratada na teoria do conjunto axiomático ao declarar que essa coleção não é um conjunto, mas uma classe apropriada; na teoria do conjunto de von Neumann-Bernays-Gödel segue-se a partir deste e o axioma de limitação de tamanho que essa classe apropriada deve estar em bijeção com a classe de todos os conjuntos. Assim, não só há infinitos infinitos, mas esse infinito é maior do que qualquer dos infinitos que ele enumera. Este paradoxo é nomeado para Georg Cantor, que muitas vezes é creditado com a primeira identificação em 1899. Como uma série de "paradoxos" não é realmente contraditório, mas meramente indicativo de uma intuição equivocada, neste caso sobre a natureza do infinito e a noção de um conjunto. Dito de outra forma, é paradoxal dentro dos limites da teoria de conjuntos naïve e, portanto, demonstra que uma axiomatização descuidada desta teoria é inconsistente.
