A dinastia carolíngia era uma família nobre franca com origens nos clãs Arnulfing e Pippinid do século 7 dC. O nome "carolíngio" deriva do nome latino-americano de Charles Martel: Carolus. A família consolidou seu poder no final do século VIII, tornando os escritórios de prefeito do palácio e dux et princeps Francorum hereditários e tornando-se os governantes de fato dos francos como os verdadeiros poderes por trás do trono.
