Um componente central da cóclea é o órgão de Corti, o órgão sensorial da audição, que é distribuído ao longo da divisão separando as câmaras de fluido no tubo cônico cônico da cóclea. O nome é derivado do latim para caracol, que, por sua vez, é do grego κοχλίας kokhlias, de κόχλος kokhlos em referência à sua forma enrolada; A cóclea é enrolada em mamíferos com exceção de monotrômetros.
