Cistina
A cistina é o aminoácido formado pela oxidação de duas moléculas de cisteína que se ligam covalentemente através de uma ligação dissulfureto. Este composto de organossulfureto tem a fórmula (SCH2CH (NH2) CO2H) 2. É um sólido branco que é ligeiramente solúvel em água. O cabelo humano e a pele contêm aproximadamente 10-14% de cistina em massa. Foi descoberto em 1810 por William Hyde Wollaston, mas não foi reconhecido como derivado de proteínas até ser isolado do chifre de uma vaca em 1899.
