Os dendritos são as projeções ramificadas de um neurônio que agem para propagar a estimulação eletroquímica recebida de outras células neurais para o corpo celular, ou soma, do neurônio a partir do qual os dendritos projetam. A estimulação elétrica é transmitida para dendritos por neurônios a montante através de sinapses que estão localizados em vários pontos em toda a árvore dendrítica. Os dendritos desempenham um papel crítico na integração desses insumos sinápticos e na determinação da extensão em que os potenciais de ação são produzidos pelo neurônio. Longas crescimentos nas células dendríticas do sistema imunológico também são chamados dendritas. Estes não devem ser confundidos com dendritos em um neurônio. As células dendríticas são células apresentadoras de antígeno no sistema imunológico de mamíferos. Suas dendritas não processam sinais elétricos. Os dendritos são um dos dois tipos de protrusões protoplasmáticas que se exaltam do corpo celular de um neurônio, sendo o outro tipo um axônio. Os axões podem ser distinguidos dos dendritos por vários recursos, incluindo forma, comprimento e função. Os dendritos geralmente diminuem em forma e são mais curtos, enquanto os axônios tendem a manter um raio constante e serem relativamente longos.
