Nota 1: A definição "cristal contendo um segundo constituinte que se enquadra e é distribuído na rede do cristal hospedeiro", dada em refs., Não é geral e, portanto, não é recomendado. Nota 2: A expressão deve ser usada para descrever uma fase sólida contendo mais de uma substância quando, por conveniência, uma das substâncias, chamadas de solvente, é tratada de forma diferente das outras substâncias, chamadas solutos. Nota 3: Um ou vários dos componentes podem ser macromoléculas.
