Giaour
Giaour ou Gawur ou Ghiaour, escrito por gâvur no turco moderno, é um insulto religioso e às vezes étnico utilizado pelos muçulmanos na Turquia e nos Balcãs para descrever todos os que não são muçulmanos, com referência particular a populações cristãs próximas como gregos, armênios, búlgaros , Sérvios, macedônios étnicos, romenos e assírios. O termo é considerado altamente ofensivo pelos cristãos nos Balcãs. A Encyclopædia Britannica de 1911 descreveu o seguinte termo: Giaour, uma palavra usada pelos turcos para descrever todos os que não são muçulmanos, com especial referência aos cristãos. A palavra, primeiro empregada como termo de desprezo e reprovação, tornou-se tão geral que, na maioria dos casos, nenhum insulto se destina ao seu uso; Da mesma forma, em partes da China, o termo demônio estrangeiro tornou-se nulo de ofensa. Uma analogia rigorosa com o giaour é encontrada no kafir árabe, ou incrédulo, que é tão comum em uso que se tornou o nome próprio de povos e países.
