A região exata definida como o Golan Heights é diferente em diferentes disciplinas: ▪ Como uma região geológica e biogeográfica, o Golan Heights é um platô basáltico limitado pelo rio Yarmouk no sul, o Mar da Galiléia e o Vale de Hula no oeste, o Monte Hermon no norte e o barranco Raqqad no leste. Os dois terços ocidentais desta região são atualmente ocupados por Israel, enquanto o terço oriental é controlado pela Síria. ▪ Como uma região geopolítica, o Golan Heights é a área capturada da Síria e ocupada por Israel durante a Guerra dos Seis Dias, território que Israel efetivamente anexou em 1981.
