O Great Rift Valley é um nome dado no final do século 19 pelo explorador britânico John Walter Gregory para a trincheira geográfica contínua, com aproximadamente 6.000 quilômetros de extensão, que vai do norte da Síria ao centro de Moçambique no sul da África Oriental. O nome continua em alguns usos, embora hoje seja considerado geologicamente impreciso, pois combina características que hoje são consideradas separadas, embora relacionadas, falhas e sistemas de falhas. Hoje, o termo é mais usado para se referir ao vale do Rift do Leste Africano, o limite de placa divergente que se estende da Afar Triple Junction para o sul em toda a África oriental e está em processo de dividir a Placa Africana em duas novas placas separadas . Os geólogos geralmente se referem a essas placas incipientes como a Placa Nubiana e a Placa Somali.
