A informação é a que informa, isto é, a partir da qual os dados podem ser derivados. A informação é transmitida como o conteúdo de uma mensagem ou através de observação direta ou indireta de alguma coisa. O que é percebido pode ser interpretado como uma mensagem por direito próprio, e nesse sentido, a informação é sempre transmitida como o conteúdo de uma mensagem. As informações podem ser codificadas em várias formas para transmissão e interpretação. Por exemplo, as informações podem ser codificadas em sinais e transmitidas através de sinais. Na Termodinâmica, a informação é qualquer tipo de evento que afeta o estado de um sistema dinâmico que pode interpretar a informação. A informação resolve a incerteza. A incerteza de um evento é medida pela sua probabilidade de ocorrência e é inversamente proporcional a isso. Quanto mais incerto um evento, mais informações são necessárias para resolver a incerteza desse evento. O bit é uma unidade típica de informação, mas outras unidades como o nat podem ser usadas. Exemplo: informação em um flip de moeda "justo": log2 = 1 bit, e em duas voltas de moeda justas é log2 = 2 bits. O conceito de que a informação é a mensagem tem significados diferentes em diferentes contextos.
