No transporte comercial, o tempo limite é a quantidade de tempo permitido em uma carta de viagem para o carregamento e descarregamento de carga. Se o tempo limite for excedido, a demora é incorrida. Se não for necessário todo o período de tempo letivo, o armador pode pagar o frete para o fretador, dependendo dos termos da carta patente. O ponto em que o tempo de demora começa é determinado por um Aviso de Preparação, que o mestre ou agente do navio deve dar ao afretador quando o navio chegou ao porto de carga ou descarga.
