Uma ogiva é a extremidade afilada de um objeto bidimensional ou tridimensional. Villard de Honnecourt, um mestre-construtor ambulante do século 13 do Picardia, no norte da França, foi o primeiro escritor a usar a palavra ogiva. O OED considera obscura a origem do termo francês; pode vir do obviata latino tardio, o particípio passivo feminino perfeito de obviare, resistir, isto é, os arcos que resistem à força descendente da massa da estrutura.
