O prognóstico é um termo médico para prever o resultado provável da posição atual. Quando aplicado a grandes populações estatísticas, as estimativas prognósticas podem ser muito precisas: por exemplo, a afirmação "45% dos pacientes com choque séptico grave morrerão dentro de 28 dias" podem ser feitos com alguma confiança, porque pesquisas anteriores descobriram que esta proporção de pacientes morreu .
