Uma rubrica é uma palavra ou seção de texto que tradicionalmente é escrito ou impresso em tinta vermelha para enfatizar. A palavra deriva do latim: rubrica, que significa ocre vermelho ou giz vermelho, e se origina em manuscritos iluminados medievais do século 13 ou anteriores. Nestes, letras vermelhas foram usadas para destacar capitais iniciais, cabeçalhos de seção e nomes de significado religioso, uma prática conhecida como rubricação, que era um estágio separado na produção de um manuscrito. A rubrica também pode significar a tinta vermelha ou a tinta utilizada para fazer rubricas, ou o pigmento usado para fazê-lo. Embora o vermelho tenha sido usado com mais freqüência, outras cores entraram em uso no final da Idade Média em diante, e a rubrica de palavras também foi usada para isso.
