Com base no Pentateuco samaritano, os samaritanos afirmam que a adoração deles é a verdadeira religião dos antigos israelitas antes do exílio babilônico, preservada por aqueles que permaneceram na Terra de Israel, em oposição ao judaísmo, o que eles dizem ser um relacionado mas alterado e religião alterada, trazida por aqueles que retornam do exílio babilônico.
