Senussi
O Senussi ou Sanussi se refere a uma ordem e tribo sufí político-religioso muçulmano na Líbia e na região do Sudão fundada em Meca em 1837 pelo Grand Senussi, Sayyid Muhammad ibn Ali as-Senussi. O Senussi reivindica uma linhagem direta ao Profeta Muhammed. Senussi estava preocupado tanto com o declínio do pensamento islâmico com a espiritualidade quanto com o enfraquecimento da integridade política muçulmana. De 1902 a 1913, o Senussi lutou a expansão francesa no Sahara e a colonização italiana da Líbia a partir de 1911. Na Primeira Guerra Mundial, o Senussi lutou contra os britânicos no Egito e no Sudão. Durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, a tribo Senussi forneceu apoio vital ao 8º Exército britânico no norte da África contra as forças alemãs e italianas. O neto do Grand Senussi tornou-se o rei Idris da Líbia em 1951. Em 1969, o rei Idris fui derrubado por um golpe militar liderado pelo coronel Muammar Gaddafi. Um terço da população na Líbia continua a ser afiliado ao movimento Senussi.
