Sultão
Sultan é um título nobre com vários significados históricos. Originalmente, era um nome abstrato de língua árabe que significa "força", "autoridade", "regra" derivado do substantivo verbal سلطة sulṭah, que significa "autoridade" ou "poder". Mais tarde, veio a ser usado como o título de certos governantes que reivindicaram a soberania quase total em termos práticos, sem reivindicar o califado geral, nem se referir a um poderoso governador de uma província dentro do califado. A dinastia e as terras governadas por um sultão são referidas como um sultanato. Uma forma feminina, usada pelos ocidentais, é sultana ou sultanah; embora o próprio estilo interprete mal os papéis das esposas dos sultões. Em um uso semelhante, a esposa de um Marechal de campo alemão pode ser denominada Feldmarschallin. As raras líderes femininas na história muçulmana são conhecidas como "sultanas". No entanto, no Sultanato de Sulu, a esposa do sultão é denominada "panguian".
