Tangente
Na geometria, a linha tangente (ou simplesmente tangente) a uma curva plana em um determinado ponto é a linha direta que "apenas toca" a curva nesse ponto. Informalmente, é uma linha através de um par de pontos infinitamente próximos na curva. Mais precisamente, uma linha recta é dita uma tangente de uma curva y = f (x) em um ponto x = c na curva se a linha passa pelo ponto (c, f (c)) na curva e tem inclinação f '(c) onde f' é a derivada de f. Uma definição semelhante aplica-se a curvas espaciais e curvas no espaço euclidiano n-dimensional. À medida que passa pelo ponto em que a linha tangente e a curva se encontram, chamado ponto de tangência, a linha tangente está "indo na mesma direção" como a curva e, portanto, é a melhor aproximação de linha reta à curva nessa ponto. Da mesma forma, o plano tangente a uma superfície em um determinado ponto é o plano que "apenas toca" a superfície nesse ponto.
