Testículo
O testículo é a gônada masculina em animais. Como os ovários aos quais são homólogos, os testículos são componentes do sistema reprodutivo e do sistema endócrino. As principais funções dos testículos são a produção de esperma e a produção de andrógenos, principalmente a testosterona. Ambas as funções do testículo são influenciadas pelos hormônios gonadotrópicos produzidos pela hipófise anterior. O hormônio luteinizante resulta em liberação de testosterona. A presença de testosterona e hormônio folículo estimulante é necessária para apoiar a espermatogênese. Também foi demonstrado em estudos com animais que, se os testículos estiverem expostos a níveis muito altos ou muito baixos de estrogênios, a espermatogênese pode ser interrompida de tal forma que os animais se tornem inférteis.
