Na química analítica, um oligoelemento é um elemento em uma amostra que possui uma concentração média inferior a 100 partes por milhão, medida em contagem atômica ou inferior a 100 microgramas por grama. Na bioquímica, um oligoelemento é um mineral dietético que é necessário em quantidades muito pequenas para o bom crescimento, desenvolvimento e fisiologia do organismo. Na geoquímica, um oligoelemento é um elemento químico cuja concentração é inferior a 1000 ppm ou 0,1% da composição de uma rocha. O termo é usado principalmente em petrologia ígnea. Os elementos de rastreamento preferem fase líquida ou sólida. Se compatível com um mineral, preferirá uma fase sólida. Se for incompatível com um elemento, preferirá uma fase líquida. A medida dessa relação é conhecida como o coeficiente de partição. Os elementos de rastreamento podem ser substituídos por catiões formadores de rede em estruturas minerais. Os minerais não devem conter elementos traço, ou seja, eles não precisam aparecer na fórmula química do mineral. Ao praticar a agricultura biodinâmica, é importante utilizar os oligoelementos do solo, a fim de fortalecer as raízes.
