Urdu (/ ʊərduː /; Urdu: اردو ALA-LC: Urdū; IPA: (escute)), ou mais precisamente Modern Urdu padrão, é um registro padronizado da língua Hindustani. O urdu é historicamente associado aos muçulmanos da região de Hindustan. É a língua nacional e lingua franca do Paquistão e uma língua oficial de seis estados indianos e uma das 22 línguas programadas na Constituição da Índia. Além do vocabulário especializado, o Urdu é mutuamente inteligível com o Padrão Hindi, que está associado à comunidade hindu. Desde o final do período Mughal no século XIX, variedades de Hindustani foram a lingua franca para grande parte do sul da Ásia.
