Ani este un oraș armean ruinat medieval situat în provincia turcă Kars, lângă granița cu Armenia. Între anii 961 și 1045 a fost capitala regatului armean medieval care a acoperit o mare parte din Armenia și Turcia de Est de astăzi. Orașul este situat pe un sit triunghiular, vizibil dramatic și defensiv în mod natural, protejat pe latura estică de râul râului Akhurian și pe partea vestică de valea Bostanlar sau Tzaghkotzadzor. Akhurianul este o ramură a râului Araks și face parte din granița actuală dintre Turcia și Armenia. Numit "Orașul a 1001 de biserici", Ani a stat pe diverse rute comerciale, iar numeroasele sale clădiri, palate și fortificații religioase erau printre cele mai avansate din punct de vedere tehnic și artistic structuri din lume. La înălțime, Ani avea o populație de 100.000-200.000 de oameni și era rivalul Constantinopolului, Bagdadului și Damascului. Cu mult timp în urmă, renumită pentru splendoarea și măreția sa, Ani a fost abandonată și uitată în mare măsură după cutremurul din 1319.

Ani is a ruined medieval Armenian city-site situated in the Turkish province of Kars, near the border with Armenia. Between 961 and 1045 it was the capital of the medieval Armenian Kingdom that covered much of present day Armenia and eastern Turkey. The city is located on a triangular site, visually dramatic and naturally defensive, protected on its eastern side by the ravine of the Akhurian River and on its western side by the Bostanlar or Tzaghkotzadzor valley. The Akhurian is a branch of the Araks River and forms part of the current border between Turkey and Armenia. Called the "City of 1001 Churches," Ani stood on various trade routes and its many religious buildings, palaces, and fortifications were amongst the most technically and artistically advanced structures in the world. At its height, Ani had a population of 100,000–200,000 people and was the rival of Constantinople, Baghdad and Damascus. Long ago renowned for its splendor and magnificence, Ani was abandoned and largely forgotten following the earthquake of 1319.
