Antonine Wall
Zidul Antonine este o fortificație de piatră și gazon, construită de romani peste ceea ce este acum Centura Centrală a Scoției, între Firth of Forth și Firth of Clyde. Reprezentând cea mai nordică barieră de frontieră a Imperiului Roman, ea a parcurs aproximativ 63 de kilometri și a fost de aproximativ 3 metri înălțime și 5 metri lățime. Securitatea a fost susținută de un șanț adânc pe latura nordică. Bariera era al doilea dintre cei doi "ziduri mari" creați de romani în Marea Britanie. Ruinele sale sunt mai puțin evidente decât cel mai cunoscut zid al lui Hadrian la sud. Construcția a început în anul 142 d.Hr. la ordinul Împăratului Roman Antoninus Pius și a durat aproximativ 12 ani pentru a fi finalizată. Presiunea din partea Caledonienilor ar fi condus-o pe Antoninus să trimită trupele imperiului în nord. Zidul era protejat de 16 forturi cu forte mici intre ele; mișcarea trupelor a fost facilitată de un drum care leagă toate locațiile cunoscute sub numele de Cale Militară. Ostașii care au construit zidul au comemorat construcția și luptele lor cu Caledonienii în plăci decorative, dintre care douăzeci încă supraviețuiesc. Zidul a fost abandonat după numai 20 de ani, iar garnizoanele s-au mutat înapoi în zidul lui Hadrian.
