Apogema unui poligon obișnuit este un segment de linie de la centru la mijlocul unei laturi. În mod echivalent, linia trasată din centrul poligonului este perpendiculară pe una din laturile sale. Cuvântul "apothem" se poate referi și la lungimea segmentului respectiv. Poligoanele regulate sunt singurele poligoane care au apoteme. Din acest motiv, toți apotemele dintr-un poligon vor fi congruenți. Pentru o piramidă obișnuită, care este o piramidă a cărei bază este un poligon obișnuit, apotemul este înălțimea înclinată a unei fețe laterale; adică cea mai mică distanță de la vârf la bază pe o față dată. Pentru o piramidă obișnuită trunchiată, apotemul este înălțimea unei fețe trapezoidale laterale. Pentru un triunghi echilateral, apothemul este echivalent cu segmentul de linie de la mijlocul unei laturi la oricare dintre centrele triunghiului, deoarece centrele triunghiului echilateral coincid ca o consecință a definiției.
