La animale, somnul este o stare recurentă în mod natural, caracterizată prin conștiență modificată, activitate senzorială relativ inhibată și inhibarea aproape a tuturor mușchilor voluntari. Se deosebește de starea de veghe printr-o capacitate scăzută de a reacționa la stimuli și este mai ușor de reversibil decât să fie în stare de hibernare sau o comă. În timpul somnului, majoritatea sistemelor dintr-un animal se află într-o stare anabolică accentuată, accentuând creșterea și întinerirea sistemelor imune, nervoase, scheletice și musculare etc. Se observă la mamifere, păsări, reptile, amfibieni și pești și formă) în insecte și chiar animale mai simple, cum ar fi nematodele (a se vedea articolul referitor la somn (non-uman)), sugerând că somnul este universal în regnul animal.
