Oțel inoxidabil austenitic
Oțelurile inoxidabile pot fi clasificate în funcție de structura lor cristalină în trei tipuri principale: austenitic, ferit și martensitic. Austeniții au austenită ca fază primară. Acestea sunt aliaje care conțin crom și nichel, structurate în jurul compoziției de tip 302 de fier, 18% crom și 8% nichel. Oțelurile austenitic nu se pot întări prin tratament termic. Cea mai cunoscută oțel inoxidabil este probabil tip 304, denumită uneori T304 sau pur și simplu 304. Oțelul chirurgical din oțel tip 304 este oțel austenitic care conține 18-20% crom și 8-10% nichel. Oțelul inoxidabil austenitic poate fi testat prin testarea nedistructivă utilizând metoda de verificare a penetrantului colorant, dar nu și metoda de inspecție a particulelor magnetice. Testarea cu curenți turbionari poate fi de asemenea folosită. Oțel inoxidabil primar utilizat în construcția de aviație.
