Numele limbii engleze, Bruce, a sosit în Scoția cu Normanii, de la numele de Brix din departamentul Manche din Normandia, Franța, adică "vădurile". Inițial promulgat prin descendenții regelui Robert I al Scoției, acesta a fost un nume de familie scoțian încă din vremea medievală; acum este un nume obișnuit dat.
