Capsicum este un gen de plante înflorite în familia de nisip Solanaceae. Speciile sale sunt originare din America, unde au fost cultivate de mii de ani. În timpurile moderne, este cultivat în întreaga lume și a devenit un element-cheie în multe bucătării regionale. În plus față de utilizarea ca condimente și legume alimentare, speciile Capsicum au găsit, de asemenea, uz în medicamente. Fructele plantelor Capsicum au o varietate de nume, în funcție de loc și de tipul lor. Soiurile piquante sunt denumite în mod obișnuit ardei iute sau pur și simplu "ardei iute". Forma mare, ușoară se numește ardei roșu, piper verde sau ardei grași în America de Nord și, de obicei, doar "capsicum" în Noua Zeelandă, Australia și India.
